Project Information
Portal Lake (formerly known as WP-6 Regional Detention Basin) is located on Schram Creek, tributary to the West Branch Papillion Creek. This site was identified in the Plan to provide regional detention of stormwater as the City of Papillion develops to the south. This site controls over 1,200 acres of drainage area and reduces flood risk to the communities of Papillion and Bellevue located downstream. The site was constructed in 2021 and the riser gate was closed to allow the pool to fill with stormwater runoff received from the watershed.
Although the water levels are low, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has already started to stock the lake with smallmouth bass and yellow perch. Portal and Big Elk Lakes are unique in that they are the only reservoirs in the Omaha metro area stocked with these species!
